Hi,

My name is Alyssa Hildebrand, and I am a voice teacher in Southern Manitoba.

Born and raised in Crystal City, MB, I had the opportunity to develop and grow my own musicianship across this province. I am thrilled to be offering voice and music lessons in Winkler, Steinbach, and Winnipeg. This province has a rich history of music making, and I am so grateful to have been steeped in these traditions. I am excited to be working with developing musicians in this area to help them understand the power of their voices!

I enjoy teaching students of all ages and abilities. Although my expertise is in classical voice and musical theater, I try to encourage my students to experiment with a wide variety of musical genres. My primary goal is to help each student reach their personal goals. If you have any questions at all about my teaching style, or questions about voice lessons, you can contact me here.

For more information about my career and background, please feel free to keep reading!

Bio

Alyssa has been teaching for several years, and works with students of many different levels and abilities. She works as a private voice teacher independently in Winkler, through the Steinbach Arts Council, and the Community School of Music and the Arts (CSMA) at Canadian Mennonite University. At CSMA she has had the opportunity to teach individual voice students, group classes, and lead a voice masterclass in February of 2020. Prior to the pandemic, she worked at Providence University College as an instructor of music.

She returned to Manitoba after completing her Master of Music degree in Literature and Performance at Western University, studying with Jackalyn Short. Prior to this she attended Canadian Mennonite University where she received a Bachelor of Music with a concentration in vocal performance, studying with David Klassen. Throughout both of these degrees, Alyssa had the opportunity to take courses on vocal pedagogy and early music education.

Alyssa has a keen interest in understanding the workings of the vocal mechanism, and is passionate about continuing her education.   She became a member of the Manitoba chapter of NATS, after attending their international NATS conference in the summer of 2020.  She is also working towards being certified with the Association for Body Mapping Education.

Alyssa is passionate about developing the musicianship of young singers in this province, and has worked to provide new opportunities for students in rural communities.  In the summers of 2017 and 2018 she worked as a voice instructor at the Ontario Mennonite Music Camp, which inspired her interest in developing a summer program in Manitoba. In 2019, she lead a one day workshop for young singers called “Find Your Voice” through Mennonite Collegiate Institute in Gretna.   This included workshops on body awareness, acting, as well as a voice masterclass.  She hopes to expand on this in the future. She has also been involved with the Homeschool Harmony choral program in Winkler, and spoke on a panel about performance anxiety led by the Douglas Kuhl School of Music.

In addition to her teaching career, Alyssa continues to find performance opportunities wherever possible.  In February of 2020, she performed with Douglas Kuhl’s School of Music as their guest performer along with the Post Roads String Ensemble.  Following this, she helped to organize and performed in an online fundraising concert for Mennonite Collegiate Institute, titled “How Can I keep from Singing?”.

Throughout her studies, Alyssa has had several performance opportunities, which included various recitals and concerts. She has also had the opportunity to perform operatic roles including; the role of Oscar in Handel’s Alcina at the Halifax Summer Opera Festival, Barbarina in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro through Accademia Europea Dell’Opera in Italy, and Josephine in HMS Pinafore (CMU), Bastienne in Bastien und Bastienne (CMU) and understudying the role of Anne Page in the Merry Wives of Windsor.   She has been the finalist in several music competitions, including the Verna Mae Janzen Competition and Winnipeg’s Tudor Bowl.
